The Original, Forgotten BATMAN 89 SEQUEL Comic? (with John Hefner/About-Faces)

Learn about a forgotten part of comic history as we dive into the ORIGINAL Batman 89 sequel comic- a Sunday newspaper strip that ran from 1989-1991 that loosely tied into the Tim Burton film! Picking up after the defeat of the Joker, the strip had its own Catwoman, Penguin, Riddler, and Mad Hatter, as well as featured its own take on the return of the Joker, Harvey Dent’s turn into Two-Face, the origin of Robin, and a big finale set within Arkham Asylum! John Hefner of about-faces and Daily Batman joins us to discuss this rare gem and the unsung contributions that writer Bill Messner-Loebs provided to the Batman mythos.

CHAPTERS:

00:00 Introduction

Ben teased this episode, under the title "The Best Comics You've Never Read," during our Dark Knight vs. The Comics series, which you can check out here.

John Hefner has the scans of the newspaper comic strip on his tumblr The Daily Batman at https://batman-daily.tumblr.com/ where you can read the script for yourself.

02:13 What IS The Batman 89 Sequel Comic Strip?

The Joker falling into water is likely taken from Marshall Rogers's previous work, collaborating with Steve Englehart, on "The Sign of the Joker" (part two of "The Laughing FIsh" and part of the Strange Apparitions collection that we covered here).

Englehart himself wrote this as the Joker's fate at the end of both of his script treatments in 1986 for the film, which we also covered here.

David Goyer's full quote about the sequel plans for Batman Begins come from an interview with Premiere magazine:

"The next one would have Batman enlisting the aid of Gordon and Dent in bringing down The Joker...but not killing him, which is a mistake they made in the first one," Batwriter David Goyer tells the latest issue of U.S. movie magazine PREMIERE. "In the third, the Joker would go on trial, scarring Dent in the process."
